What should I bring and how do I prepare for classes?
Come prepared to sweat, bring a hand towel.
If you're a profuse sweater, please bring a yoga rug to go over your mat to absorb excess sweat so you can maintain traction.
Wear something you can easily move in such as t-shirts, tank tops and long shorts or running shorts for men. Leotards, tank tops, t-shirts, tights or running shorts for women.
Bring a sticky mat if you have one. Thin mats are available on a first come, first served basis.
Drink plenty of water before and after class. You may want to bring a bottle of water to class.
Do not eat 2 hours before class. An empty stomach is recommended for maximum ease and benefit.
What does Shala mean? Shala is a school or place to study Yoga.
What does Yoga mean? Yoga's history can be traced back to 5,000 years and is a Sanskrit word meaning to join, or yoke; union. Its' full meaning is about the union of body, mind and spirit. It also is about the ending of the chatter of the mind, so that the mind can experience stillness, thus a meditative mind can be nurtured.
In our culture yoga is about reducing stress and anxiety of modern life; it's about relaxation, strength, and flexibility. A quiet mind and body can awaken the depths of one's being.
Can Beginners attend any class? We do offer classes for students who are new to Yoga. If you are not sure you might want to start there or ask an instructor. All classes are structured for all levels. Modifications are given for postures during the class. We ask that you practice to your abilities and listen to your body.
Why should we practice to our abilities? You are the only one who knows your body's limits and abilities. The instructors will encourage you to explore those limits; however students must take responsibility for their own practice and bodies. If you are new to exercise, you will need to learn the difference between stretching muscles and pain. The former is something to work though, the latter is something you should avoid.
What if I'm not that flexible? We encourage you to develop a flexible mind. You don't need to be physically flexible. All you need is to focus on letting go, sweating, breathing, moving, and respecting your limitations. A yoga pose will expose blocks and imbalances and regular yoga practice will increase anyone's flexibility level.
How often should I practice? The key to a successful yoga practice is consistency combined with discipline and wisdom. For life-changing results we recommend practicing four to six days per week. A practice of two to three days per week, if consistent, will create transformation over time. Develop the spirit of repetition and dedication in your practice and you will see results.
Will Yoga help me lose weight? Many students report that after practicing yoga consistently, they feel less hungry and make better choices when eating. As part of an overall healthy lifestyle, yoga is a great way to cleanse the body, increase metabolism, stimulate waste elimination, and reduce food cravings.
